Royal Pine Coral is a hand-knotted wool Indian carpet. Woven on looms located in the ancient city of Jaipur, thiscarpet and the rugs from this area were an inspiration to William Morris and other noted Arts and Crafts leaders intheir design of textiles and wallpapers. This design is from a carpet woven during the reign of Jahangir (r.1605-27).During this Mughal King’s reign trade with the West brought European botanical paintings to India, which inspiredMughal artists to reproduce their own plants naturalistically. The flowerheads on this superb rug fall within a trellisformed by curved serrated leaves. The color pallet reflects the traditional colors from the Rajasthan region where Jaipuris located. Similar floral work can be seen on the walls, ceiling, and floor of the famed Taj Mahal.
