Mughal Silk Ivory is hand-knotted wool Indian carpet with a touch of silk. Woven on looms located in the ancientcity of Jaipur, this carpet and the rugs from this area were an inspiration to William Morris and other noted Artsand Crafts leaders in their design of textiles and wallpapers. This design is from a carpet woven during the reign ofJahangir (r.1605-27). During this Mughal King’s reign trade with the West brought European botanical paintings toIndia, which inspired Mughal artists to reproduce their own plants naturalistically. The flowerheads on this superb rugfall within a trellis formed by curved serrated leaves. The color pallet reflects the traditional colors from the Rajasthanregion where Jaipur is located. Similar floral work can be seen on the walls, ceiling, and floor of the famed Taj Mahal.
