Stickley Fine Upholstery
April 29th, 2012
If I were to ask the average person what comes to mind when they hear the word “Stickley,” the most common responses would probably be: Mission, Arts & Crafts, Oak or maybe Morris. It might surprise you to know that after Mission, Stickley Furniture Co’s best selling category is Upholstery. You might also be floored by the range of sophisticated styles available and the virtually unlimited scope of customization.
We are so impressed with the product, that we are in the process of adding another 3000 square feet to our Stickley Gallery – just for upholstery!
Stickley Upholstery – like all Stickley product- is built to to the absolute highest standards. For those that appreciate specifications, here is what’s under the hood:
- Sold hardwood frames with double-doweled joints – Usually maple, joints are double-doweled wherever possible for strongest frame possible.
- Marshall Unit Backs – Most companies use single density foam in tight-back applications. Stickley uses wrapped coils wrapped in foam for resiliency and comfort.
- Eight-way hand knotted spring system. Other manufacturers will boast about their eight-way hand tied spring system. Stickley actually hand knots each tie which ensures the comfort design will maintain its consistency.
- All skirts are hand-mitred for a light, elegant and tailored hang. No tack strips or cardboard here. The feet have levellers to ensure the skirt will fit precisely with various floor coverings.
- Four-way center matched or flow-matched where applicable. This is perhaps the most amazing feature of Stickley Fine Upholstery. If the pattern has a dominant motif, it will be centred on the cushion backs and inside arm of the piece. If the pattern does not have a dominant motif, it will be flow matched so that the pattern flows unbroken even across seams and cushions! INCLUDING ACROSS SECTIONAL PIECES! This really must be seen to be appreciated.
Its possible to pay a lot more for your upholstery, but its our opinion that you cannot find better quality.

Stickley Furniture

Finesse Home Living is proud offer Stickley Furniture exclusively in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
In 1901, Gustav Stickley published the inaugural issue of The Craftsman. The magazine, along with Stickley’s iconic furniture designs inspired a nation-wide interpretation of the British Arts & Crafts movement (as espoused by William Morris and John Ruskin) which became known as The American Arts & Crafts or American Craftsman movement. “Mission-style” although often used to describe Craftsman, is a specific term realting to a sub-genre of architecture and design. Some important figures in the movement include:
- Gustav Stickley: Furniture designer, manufacturer and publisher of The Craftsman
- Leopold Stickey: Furniture designer & manufacturer. Brother of Gustav.
- Greene & Greene: California based architects (Pasadena Bungalow is a interpretation of Greene & Greene designs)
- Frank Lloyd Wright: Midwest based architect.
- Harvey Ellis: New York based architect. Ellis designed a line of mission style furniture before his death in 1904. His designs are still produced by Stickley and are characterized by whimsical inlays which counter-play the vertical and horizontal perspectives which characterize mission style.
- For more information on Stickley in a historical conext, visit the Stickley Museum website.
Stickley’s motto is Als Ik Kan which translates from old Flemish as “The Best of My Ability.” This
motto best describes the difference Stickley is proud to represent. Stickley furniture is constructed with attention to detail almost unknown in today’s manufacturing.

Today’s Stickley offers many innovative products in addition to its originial designs. All collections are constructed with the same care and attention that have characterized it for over a century. Visit the Stickley Website, or Finesse Home Living, to browse all the collections.

Caracole Home – New at Finesse Home Living
August 13th, 2010
Caracole Home is unique in its approach to decor. Rather than rigidly defined collections, the designers at Caracole have grouped their offering into three broad aesthetic categories. Each category features a uniquely whimsical and eclectic blend of high-design, independent products. Caracole Home encourages free-thinking through atypical scaling(like over sized night tables which could be used as dressers), increased functionality (dressers with wine storage options to be used as servers) and dual purpose design(armoires with entertainment storage). Caracole Home is separated into four portfolios (which are all offered in Edmonton at Finesse Home Living exclusively) :
Naturally Casual:
Casual ambiance with intriguing variances in scaling. Think SoHo, Tribecca or San Francisco – this collection will appeal to those that appreciate the beauty of the outdoors.

Purchasing Earth-Friendly Furniture
July 30th, 2010
1. Purchase Locally
With home furnishings, this can be difficult. However, purchasing pieces manufactured in North America can significantly reduce the usage of fossil fuels in transportation.
Finesse Home Living’s Choice:
Dinec – Solid wood Dining and Bedroom furniture manufactured in Quebec using North American Birch from certified sources. Dinec produces by order meaning less energy for warehousing excess stock. Dinec also offers numerous choices and options allowing you to customize your purchase to fit your vision.

USA: Huntington House, Guildcraft of California, Young America by Stanley Furniture, Saloom, American Leather, Elite Leather, Bernhardt, Paladin Furniture, Little Castle
2. Reclaimed Materials
As sustainable design has become more prevalent, numerous designers have begun looking at new sourcing strategies. One such strategy is the reconditioning of exotic or valuable hardwoods for use in home décor.
Finesse Home Living’s Choice:
Environment Furniture – Environment Furniture revolutionized sustainable design when it began using reconditioned Brazilian Peroba Rosa and sustainably harvested Indonesian Mahogany. They have also eliminated all
VOC emitting stains from their manufacturing process. Environment Furniture has been featured in Time Magazine’s “Green Design 100” and is a popular choice amongst celebrities.

3. Sustainable Harvest
As the design industry moves towards sustainability, more and more manufacturers are sourcing only from certified
sources. Look for companies that work with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) in the manufacturing process.
American Leather – American Leather is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and sources all hardwoods from sustainable forests. They also recycle and repurpose scrap hardwoods; use VOC free water-based binders and glue; incorporate soy-based, CFC free cushioning; use a just-in-time custom manufacturing process and manufacture solely in North America.
4. Purchase Quality
The manufacturing and transportation of furniture requires a lot of energy. Perhaps the best way to reduce your impact is to purchase the best quality product possible. It does not have to be the most expensive—just well built.
Choose a product with durable construction and timeless design to extend the life-cycle.Finesse Home Living’s Choice
